Egypt, 18th Dynasty, new empire on the right bank of the Nile, 1346

Nefertiti is happy. She reigns with the pharaoh Amenhotep IV who has just created the new capital Tell El Amarna to the north of Thebes. The Great Royal Wife has founded a new cult dedicated to the Sun God and the king is henceforth called Akhenaton.

Climatic conditions have been excellent for the last two years and bode well for the new high-yielding crops that have just been planted. In order to ensure continued growth and quality of life for its subjects, the royal couple wishes to intensify commercial exchanges with neighbouring monarchs. A reception is organized to the highest specifications and Nefertiti arranges visits through the Nile valley – a garden stretching to the horizon and beyond

The valley is more than just Egypt’s granary; it is an enormous basket of flowers and fruit on the edge of which lies the ochre desert bleached by the rays of the God Aton. Nefertiti would like this image to accompany her guests at all times so that they keep forever in their mind’s eye the memory of all this abundance.

Nefertiti’s beauty is legendary; the mere sound of her name which means “the beautiful one has arrived” evokes fascination, but she is not satisfied and wishes to wear a perfume that will accentuate even further this fascination. The perfume alone must reflect all the richness of every essence produced in her empire and, as such, serve as ambassador beyond the country’s borders. Furthermore, she insists that a single application of the perfume must suffice.

Even the most subtle and exquisite elixirs fall short of the queen’s satisfaction; by afternoon, the fragrances have faded. In concentrated form, the natural extracts lose their quality, weakened by the sun Aton at the peak of his strength. Nefertiti remains adamant.

The miracle is finally brought about by the chief perfumer, a woman whose ingenious idea it is to infuse the bath of ass’ milk with handfuls of petals and other essences freshly gathered at dawn.

The nourishing and soothing effect is felt at once on the queen’s skin; her body delights in the delicate perfume which unveils itself discreetly with every movement she makes.

Her guests are impressed. They compliment her again and again on the fragrances she exudes by her mere presence: oriental pastries, magnolia and amber.

Everyone becomes enchanted by the queen and from among her many admirers she chooses a young sculptor by the name of Thutmose whose muscles carry out a spellbinding dance as he carves the stone. He is equally bewitched by the queen and, nourished by the passion he feels, he creates several works of art in the sovereign’s image.

In 1912 at Tell El Armana, a bust was discovered immortalizing the queen wearing an intense expression of beauty.

The work of art was only revealed to the general public by an archaeologist as late as 1925. Several witnesses claim that in the intervening 13 years, an extraordinary perfume emanated mysteriously from the sculpture ...
